Howard Phillips – America’s Loss of a Great Christian Patriot

Perspective

Howard Phillips Memoriam - Scaled for Blog

In the wake of America’s loss this past Saturday of a true Christian patriot, Howard Phillips, I am reminded of my response to a web post that I read a few months back. In commenting on an article posted at forbes.com, an individual stated that “My natural desire is that a new group of Founding Fathers would arise in the spirit of the original Founding Fathers.” My response to that individual was that America already has patriots

Howard Phillips – obituary

HowardPhillips-276x275

Howard Phillips, 1941 – 2003

Howard Phillips, founder of the Constitution Party, died at 3:50 PM, EST Saturday, April 20, 2013.

I met Howard in early 1992 when I was introduced to him by Don McIlvaney. Don asked my choice for the election that year and I said neither so he introduced me to Howard who was trying to start a new party. My wife, Joan and I became the Tennessee delegates to the first national convention.

Over time, Howard mentored me in politics and became a political father to me. Little by little he brought me along as I was able to accept more and more responsibility.  Most of all he was my dear friend and I’ll miss him.

Howard enabled Joan and me to serve in the great cause of liberty and in the struggle for the soul of America. It will not be the same without his advice, wise counsel, and his eloquent speaker’s voice at every meeting. Listening to Howard’s stories and jokes were the highlights of every CP meeting. He knew so many different people in government that he could entertain endlessly with stories from his past. Howard had a great sense of humor and always appreciated a good joke. He loved theater, movies, and his family and never tired of talking about his children’s accomplishments. He never failed to inquire about family members not present and was intensely loyal and expected the same in return. He was always loyal to me and I like to think I was the same for him.

I remember Howard as being the best at speaking in front of a camera or just in front of a group. He had a matchless gift for the English language and was merciless as an editor. I learned a lot from him in that regard.

Howard Phillips was a lot more than I have been able to say with these few words. In the words of his son Doug he was the most principled and courageous statesman of his generation. He inspired many thousands of people with his courageous fight for liberty. He was a larger than life figure whose intellect towered over most of us.

I am honored to have known Howard and to have called him friend and brother. We were brothers in the fight for liberty and for western civilization, and we were brothers in Christ.

Rest in peace, Howard.

2008 Constitution Party Vice-Presidential Candidate

Boston Marathon Bombings and The Only True Source of Safety

Perspective

CrossBibleFlag - 263x210Whatever the final story behind the Boston Marathon bombings turns out to be, one thing is already evident.  No amount of bombs dropped on far away countries, drones flying overhead, airport security scanners, warrantless wiretaps, or gun free zones can make a people safe.  Safety – true safety – is only of the Lord.

I am mindful of the first words that bubbled up within me upon seeing the twin towers falling on 9-11, “America, how long will you be proud?”  That is to say, how long will we trust in ourselves, thinking we don’t need God, that we are sufficient in ourselves, can fix our own problems and meet our own needs?

CPoW response to Boston Bombings

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
APRIL 17, 2013

ImageCONTACT: 877-201-2441

By Riley J. Hood—Constitution Party of Wisconsin (CPoW) State Chairman

MILWAUKEE-On Monday, April 15, 2013 an act of terrorism was perpetrated at the Boston Marathon in Boston, MA.  We do not yet know who did it.  Properly written law only punishes an act after a crime has been committed.  Improper law places restrictions on the innocent.

The CPoW position on acts of violence is straight forward; LAW exists to restrain the Lawless. If that means using lethal force, so be it. “Because a sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.” Ecclesiastes 8:11

We support the Rule of Law. We are committed to having the Civil Government once again punish criminals, not abet them.  CPoW agrees with Alexander Hamilton, “The hope of impunity is a strong incitement to sedition; the dread of punishment, a proportionately strong discouragement to it.” (Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 27).

More citizen disarmament and harassment is not the answer.  Neither is falsely accusing people you do not like.  The person or persons who planted these explosives are the ones who are guilty.  CPoW is not shy in asserting that the death penalty is the appropriate punishment for murder.

The Constitution Party of Wisconsin is a political party. We are committed to the electoral process.  We are committed to placing people of courage into positions of authority, who will see that these crimes are punished.  The only proper “terror” would be that of criminals afraid of the consequences and thus not carrying out their evil ideas.

Want To Get High? Want To Be Free?

high

Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves as servants to obey,
his servants  ye
are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death,
or of obedience unto righteous?” Romans 6:16

By Riley J. Hood-CPoW State Chairman

When I was little I saw one of these 1960′s “surfer movies,” where an older man asked this hippy character, “What is it you want?” Of course the hippy boldly declared, “We want to do want we want to do. We want to get high, we want get loaded, and that’s what we want.” I have always thought that sounds similar to the Libertarian Party Platform’s Victim-less Crime Plank, “..we favor the repeal of federal, state, and local laws restricting our fundamental freedom to govern our own lives. In particular, we advocate: The repeal of laws restricting the production, sale, possession, or use of prohibited drugs and medicines…The decriminalization of assisted suicide.” I’m here to tell you right now, if you want to get high, and still be free, you want what never was, and what will never be. Why is that?

  • Addiction– When Marijuana or Cocaine are legalized, you will be legally free to start consuming these drugs, but you won’t be physically free to stop. To stop, you will go through withdrawal, and long term emotional, physical, and neural damage. This was recognized over 100 years ago, when these drugs were outlawed. Politicians want an America on dope. Why? Figure it out. How many junkies unite to overthrow their dope dealer? How many junkies will unite to resist tyranny? None.
  • Extortion-In this era of socialized medicine, an administration could silence opponents by withholding their medication, and if government becomes the dope dealer, as many high officials want to be, they could use the same tactics on the addicted. Government is already exploiting smokers, by taxing cigarettes to a ridiculous level. This isn’t about motivating people to quit; this is about fleecing the addicted. If government wanted people to quit, then a law would be passed outlawing cigarettes. (By the way, if you are smoking, by all means quit.)
  • Anarchy-When faced with a spate of robberies, and mass shootings, a frightened public will prefer totalitarianism to lawlessness, and cry out to the government to enslave them, on the elusive pretexts of “personal peace,” and “crime prevention.” Never mind, immorality is at the root of most crime, and drugs and alcohol are involved in over 80% of crime. Never mind mass shooters are often on psych-meds, and drive-by shooters in the inner city are often high on crack. No calls for prohibition these days, just gun-control.

The Constitution Party of Wisconsin upholds the ideals of self-control and self-government. One of the ill effects of being intoxicated, whether by alcohol, prescription medicine, or currently illegal drugs; is that your inhibitions are reduced, thus you have less self-control. Less self-control leads to more crime, and ultimately to tyranny. Our CPoW Platform Character Plank, states, “Our party leaders and public officials must display exemplary qualities of honesty, integrity, reliability, moral uprightness, fidelity, prudence, temperance, justice, fortitude, self-restraint, courage, kindness, and compassion. If they cannot be trusted in private life, neither can they be trusted in public life.”

From our Drug Abuse Plank, “The Constitution Party will uphold the right of states and localities to restrict access to drugs and to enforce such restrictions. We support legislation to stop the flow of illegal drugs into the United States from foreign sources. As a matter of self-defense, retaliatory policies including embargoes, sanctions, and tariffs, should be considered.”

“While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but once they lose their virtue they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader.” Samuel Adams
