And who will protect us from the military and the police?

Before I go any further, I want to make it clear that I am not disparaging anybody who is in the military or in law enforcement. I AM stating emphatically that evil people exist in all areas of our society, including the military and law enforcement.

What is my point?  By far, the most common argument I hear from those who blame guns for the ills of society is this:

“Individuals do not need guns.  Only the military and police should have guns.”

To that I ask:  If only the military and the police have guns, who will protect us from the military and the police?

The anti-constitution crowd always sneers at this response, as if the very notion of bad behavior amongst certain individuals in the military and law enforcement is completely impossible.

This brings us to Christopher Dorner.  He was the disgruntled, former Los Angeles Police Department officer and former Navy lieutenant who killed several other police officers and civilians.  Did you catch that?  He was BOTH a member of the military AND the police.  This man was able to hunt down and kill other trained police officers, some of whom were aware that he was on the loose.

So I ask, if trained police officers cannot defend themselves against a lone gunman, how can they be expected to protect the rest of us?  The answer is; they cannot.  That is one of the reasons we have the 2nd Amendment:

“A well-regulated militia [this means an armed citizenry], being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

Evil exists on this planet.  Evil people have been behaving badly since the beginning of time.  It is time that we grow up and acknowledge the obvious.  YOU are primarily responsible for the defense of you and your family.  Those in uniform are there to support you by catching and punishing the evil doer.  Freedom is not free.  It is an awesome responsibility.  If you abdicate that responsibility to others, you will soon find that you are no longer free.
